Puppiescrate and run
Built step by step
Puppy box and exercise area
Today I thought about the design of the whelping box and then drew up a rough construction plan. There are lots of examples online of how to build a good whelping box. For me, the most important things are that it is made of untreated materials, can be easily assembled and dismantled, and that Luna feels comfortable in it.
Whelping box with puppy protection frame, 3-step access and 1/3 cover.
Our whelping box measures 140x140x60cm and is made of spruce plywood and can be completely dismantled. It has 3-step access with two extra inserts. This gives us 10cm, 30cm and 50cm. 30cm is "mum mode" and only Luna can get in. The puppies are too small and cannot get over it. When they are big enough and allowed into the run, the second segment can be removed.
Three-step access
Inside, there is a puppy protection frame measuring 136.4 x 8 x 2 cm, mitred at a height of 10 cm. The puppies can hide underneath it when Luna lies down. I have adapted it to the frame of the entrance area.
Puppy protection ring all around
To give Luna and the puppies a little more peace and quiet and a "cave feeling", I added a fully hinged lid to the whelping box, which covers about 1/3 of the floor space.
Lid closed.
The basic idea is that I want to prepare a separate space for the puppies, as discussed with the breeding supervisor. The whelping box will be placed at the back left of the room and then completely enclosed by several fence sections of different lengths, thus forming an enclosure in the room. Like the whelping box itself, the enclosure should be completely dismantlable.
I bought the materials for the run at the same time. It will have a 3-step access, just like the whelping box itself. When the puppies are big enough, it can be opened up piece by piece. I will take pictures of the run in the next few days and upload them here.
